A South Carolina mother, Destiny Dionne, and her husband, Joshua Latimer, are facing severe charges following the tragic death of their 4-year-old son, Isaiah Dionne. The couple is charged with homicide by child abuse and unlawful conduct toward a child. Latimer, a Trooper with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, was arrested alongside Dionne after their son was found unresponsive in their Walhalla home.
On September 19, first responders arrived at the family’s home after a 911 call reporting that Isaiah had gone into cardiac arrest. According to the coroner, the child was cold to the touch when paramedics arrived. The child was later pronounced dead, and both Dionne and Latimer were arrested and denied bond.
However, Dionne filed a motion asking the judge to reconsider the bond denial, which was heard in a court session on Thursday. During the hearing, 10th Circuit Solicitor Micah Black revealed disturbing details about Isaiah’s living conditions before his death. “He was basically skin and bones, for a lack of a better word,” Black said.
One of the EMS personnel at the scene reportedly described Isaiah’s condition as resembling “something you’d see on TV, to starving children in Africa.” Black also noted the shocking circumstances of Isaiah’s living environment. The young boy was reportedly forced to sleep on a blanket, with no bed or mattress, and the curtains in his room were stapled shut to prevent any natural light from entering.
The defense acknowledged the severity of the allegations but argued that Dionne is neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community, making her eligible for bond. However, the judge disagreed, emphasizing the grave nature of the case and the danger posed to the community. Dionne’s bond request was once again denied, though she has the option to request a reconsideration in six months.
The exact cause of Isaiah’s death has yet to be determined, as investigators are still awaiting toxicology results. The heart-wrenching case highlights the extreme abuse the child endured, leaving the community shaken and demanding justice for the little boy’s tragic death.
