Maryland Man Stabs Fiancée to Death in Walmart, a Week After Engagement

A Howard County judge denied bail Monday for a man accused of fatally stabbing his fiancée inside her Ellicott City apartment. Rondale Dickerson, 34, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 44-year-old Shelaya Broadwater, who was discovered dead Thursday morning.

Police said Broadwater’s teenage daughter found her mother’s body and called 911. “Your caller is going to be 14 years old, advising that they found their mom deceased, also advising that there is blood everywhere,” an officer said over police radio, according to Broadcastify recordings introduced in court.

Prosecutors said Dickerson went to Broadwater’s apartment around 5 a.m. after an argument. Broadwater’s daughter told investigators that Dickerson forced his way inside. Police allege that just days after becoming engaged, Dickerson stabbed Broadwater multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Dickerson was arrested a short time later at a Walmart less than a mile from the apartment. Police said he allegedly confessed after being taken into custody. When officers located him, Dickerson was shirtless, covered in cuts and gashes, suggesting there had been a violent struggle.

Prosecutors described the killing as “brutal, vicious and full of rage,” arguing that the level of force used showed Dickerson posed a serious danger to the public. They also warned the court that he was a flight risk, according to WBAL-TV.

During the bail hearing, Dickerson appeared calm and answered the judge’s questions directly. This demeanor contrasted with what officers described at the time of his arrest, when they said he was acting erratically.

His public defender noted that Dickerson had maintained steady employment for 14 years with Perdue and Tyson Farms. However, court documents revealed that on his intake form, Dickerson had reported himself as unemployed.

The judge sided with prosecutors, citing both the violent nature of the crime and the risk of flight in denying bail. Broadwater’s death has shaken the Ellicott City community, where friends and neighbors are grappling with the shocking details of the case.

Police said the investigation remains active as they continue to piece together events leading up to the killing. Dickerson’s next court appearance has been scheduled for October 22.
