A 21-year-old woman celebrating her birthday at an Airbnb was brutally killed by a man she had known for years, leading to a 23-year-to-life prison sentence for her murderer. Joselyn Toaquiza’s body was discovered dumped in a park after Jhon Chacaguasay-Ilbis, her childhood friend, choked her to death on June 18, 2024. Chacaguasay-Ilbis pleaded guilty and was sentenced on March 10.
The two families had known each other for years, having met in Ecuador before immigrating to the United States. During the sentencing, Chacaguasay-Ilbis was permitted to address Toaquiza’s family. “I want to apologize to [Toaquiza’s] family, to my family, and to my friends and mates for all the pain and suffering that I have caused,” he said in court, according to a report by syracuse.com.

He continued, “I feel really bad and ashamed for this situation that I caused, for ignoring my principles and values. I understand and I respect your pain. I acknowledge the damage and I’m responsible for my actions. I regret everything and I wholeheartedly ask for your forgiveness. I wasn’t conscious about what I did.”
Toaquiza’s father expressed his grief in a statement read in court, writing, “I am devastated by your departure my princess.”

According to Syracuse.com, Chacaguasay-Ilbis had purchased a cake, sneakers, and wine bottles with “I love you” written on them for Toaquiza’s birthday celebration. Ring camera footage showed the two entering the Airbnb together, with Chacaguasay-Ilbis later seen leaving the property carrying Toaquiza’s lifeless body over his shoulder.

Court records revealed that after the murder, Chacaguasay-Ilbis used Toaquiza’s credit cards to pay for OnlyFans subscriptions and make other purchases before turning himself in. Despite his claims of being drunk and unaware of his actions, no clear motive for the killing was ever established.
The case has left both families shattered, highlighting the tragic consequences of a friendship turned deadly. Chacaguasay-Ilbis’s sentencing brings a measure of justice, but the pain of Toaquiza’s loss remains deeply felt by her loved ones.
