Man Left Disabled Wife to Die on Floor for 6 Months After She Fell from Wheelchair

A 70-year-old North Carolina man, Louis Kornhaber, has been sentenced to prison for the second-degree murder of his wife, Bonnie after he left her on the floor for six to eight months following a fall from her wheelchair. Kornhaber, who was married to Bonnie for 40 years, claimed he did not seek help due to embarrassment over their cluttered, “hoarder house” conditions.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg District Attorney’s Office, Bonnie, 66, returned home from the hospital in October 2020 and required a wheelchair due to a medical condition. Kornhaber secured her to the wheelchair with a belt, but at some point, she slipped out and fell to the floor, where she remained for months.

Kornhaber admitted he never called 911, citing embarrassment over the state of their home, which detectives later described as a “hoarder house.” On June 4, 2021, Bonnie told her husband she was having trouble breathing. Instead of seeking immediate help, Kornhaber reportedly went to watch television for several hours before finally calling emergency services.

First responders found Bonnie deceased, lying on a pile of trash and surrounded by spoiled food. She had extensive sores and insect activity in her open wounds, the District Attorney’s Office stated. Kornhaber was found guilty on February 28 of second-degree murder and neglect of a disabled or elderly adult resulting in serious physical injury. He has been sentenced to 94 to 125 months in prison.

The District Attorney’s Office urged the public to report suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation of adults over 18 by calling the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services Adult Protective Services at 704-336-2273 (CARE). The case has highlighted the tragic consequences of neglect and the importance of community vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals.
