Minnesota Man Killed Co-Worker with Sledgehammer Because He ‘Did Not Like Her,’

A Minnesota community is grieving after a young woman was killed in a violent attack at her workplace in Cokato. Prosecutors have charged 40-year-old David Bruce Delong with second-degree murder, alleging he planned the killing of his coworker, 20-year-old Amber Czech of Hutchinson.

According to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday, Delong told investigators he did not like Czech and had been planning to kill her for some time. Czech’s father told KARE 11’s Jessica Hart that his daughter will be deeply missed. He described her as outgoing, hardworking, and always willing to help others.

He said she loved her job as a welder and discovered her passion for welding while still in high school. Czech attended Alexandria Technical and Community College and completed the school’s 10-month welding technology program before graduating in spring 2024.

In a statement, the college said “she exemplified the qualities we strive to instill in all our students—hard work, determination, and professionalism,” and noted she was respected by instructors and classmates for her dedication to the craft.

The Wright County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to Advanced Process Technologies just after 6 a.m. Tuesday, following a report that an employee had been found with “significant head trauma.” First responders attempted lifesaving measures, but Czech was pronounced dead at the scene.

Early findings suggested she had been attacked with a blunt object. Delong was quickly identified as the suspect and taken into custody. Wright County Attorney Brian Lutes said in a statement, “I will evaluate this case for a possible charge of 1st degree premeditated murder, which requires convening a grand jury.”

Court documents describe disturbing surveillance footage showing Delong leaving his work station, approaching Czech, and picking up a sledgehammer before striking her in the head. He then hit her four more times after she fell to the ground. After being advised of his rights, Delong allegedly told deputies that he intended to kill her and had planned the assault.

Advanced Process Technologies released a statement expressing their grief. “We are heartbroken by yesterday’s tragedy, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends in this terrible moment. We are also making sure our employees have the support they need and working closely with law enforcement as they continue their investigation.”

The company paused production for the rest of the week, with administrative staff working remotely. Delong is scheduled to appear in court on November 24 at 9 a.m.
