Authorities in Clarion County have charged a local man with homicide after a weeks-long investigation into the stabbing death of a DuBois woman. Police say 34-year-old Chase Steigerwald is accused of killing 45-year-old Rachel Roman inside his apartment in Clarion Borough and then attempting to “stage” the scene to make the death appear to be a suicide.
According to the affidavit, officers discovered Roman’s body inside the apartment on the morning of November 5. Investigators interviewed several witnesses, who told police that Steigerwald and Roman had been arguing on the night she died. One witness claimed to have heard Roman being killed and accused Steigerwald of trying to manipulate the scene afterward.
A forensic search of the apartment reportedly revealed evidence pointing to a violent struggle. Investigators documented what they described as a “large amount of blood” inside the residence, along with indications that the area had been disturbed in an effort to alter how the scene would appear to police.
An autopsy confirmed that Roman suffered multiple “sharp-force” stab wounds to her neck and face, findings that led authorities to rule her death a homicide rather than a self-inflicted injury.
With the autopsy results and witness statements in hand, investigators moved forward with charges against Steigerwald. Police say the evidence contradicts any suggestion that Roman’s injuries could have been caused by anything other than an assault.
The case remains active as authorities continue to gather additional forensic information and prepare for court proceedings. Roman’s death has shaken both the DuBois and Clarion communities, where friends and family are now awaiting justice in a case that has raised questions about domestic conflict and violence behind closed doors.
Steigerwald is currently being held while the investigation continues, and further charges may be considered as more evidence is processed. Authorities have not released additional details, but they say the findings so far leave little doubt about what happened inside the apartment that night.
