A 69-year-old Florida man has been charged with second-degree murder after a fatal shooting occurred in a flea market parking lot, following an argument over his wife’s affair. Omar Rene Aguila is accused of killing the victim on July 12 at the Northside Shopping Center in Miami. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Miami Herald, the victim and Aguila’s wife had been having an affair since 2019.
Aguila reportedly learned of the relationship in April 2024 and urged his wife to end the affair. However, two days before the shooting, the victim allegedly showed up at Aguila’s home, leading to a confrontation between him and the suspect.
On the day of the shooting, Aguila, his wife, and their son were at the flea market when the victim arrived to drop off food to a friend. Afterward, the victim attempted to speak with Aguila’s wife before leaving the area. According to the affidavit, Aguila approached the victim’s car, and the two men began arguing.
Within moments, Aguila reportedly pulled out a gun and shot the victim multiple times. Surveillance footage from the scene allegedly captured the shooting, according to detectives. Paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital, but he was later pronounced dead. The victim’s identity has not been released publicly.
Initially, Aguila was released after the shooting as he claimed self-defense, stating that the victim had a gun in his car. However, investigators determined that the victim was never armed. Aguila, a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing a firearm. In addition to the second-degree murder charge, he now faces an additional charge for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Aguila was arrested on Thursday and is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
