1. Fitness should be a priority.

Though you don’t have to work out seven days a week, like many models do, you still have to keep at it. Exercise leaves you flooded with endorphins and eventually craving more, so hopping off the couch and onto the treadmill will get easier with time. Just try to do something active every day, even if it’s simply walking your dog.

2. Maintain.

Everyone’s allowed to have an “off-day” once in a while, but if you’ve had a really horrible day, chances are, exercise will help. It’s those feel-good endorphins getting released in your system that you can only get from working out. Try to keep at it year-round; don’t get complacent when winter hits.

3. Skip the gym—and the excuses.

You don’t need high-tech equipment to burn calories. Sure, a nice pair of running shoes will help, but other than that, all you have to do is run. Don’t use money as an excuse not to join a gym, and don’t refuse to exercise because you’re not a gym member.

4. Don’t be a slacker.

No matter what the exercise, proper form counts. Ten repetitions with perfect technique are going to be far more effective than 30 reps with sloppy form.

5. Do some strength training.

Don’t just work out to look good; try to focus on how you feel, as well. While high reps at a faster pace will help you slim down, it’s important to do lower reps at a slower pace once in a while to help build strength and muscle.

6. Don’t reward yourself with food.

After a grueling workout, as tempting as it may be to just sit back and indulge, try to focus instead on refueling your body with the nutrients it needs. Avoid starch, sugar and processed foods if you can, and try to eat more lean meats, vegetables and whole grains.

7. Don’t eat before bed.

Try to finish your snacking three hours before you go to sleep, and jumpstart your day with a hearty breakfast.

8. Forget the latest fad diet.

Fad diets are not good for your health or wellbeing. Though starving yourself can help you drop pounds initially, it is incredibly unhealthy and will ultimately put your body in starvation mode. A balanced diet and regular exercise is the best way to trim down and tone up.

9. Splurge on special occasions.

It’s a good idea to incorporate healthy eating habits into your daily routine, but don’t let it run your life—or ruin it. It’s okay to splurge, but limit it to special occasions only.

10. Find a buddy.

Having a fitness buddy will make the entire process so much more enjoyable, and you’ll have someone to motivate you when you find yourself slipping.
