Authorities have arrested the husband of a woman who was found dead inside a burned home in San Marino earlier this year. The case, initially treated as a suspicious fire, has now led to a murder investigation.
Firefighters discovered the body of 56-year-old Irene Gaw-Lai after responding to a residential blaze on the morning of January 6 in the 2600 block of Lorain Road, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Officials noted signs of physical trauma on the upper part of her body, prompting detectives to launch a homicide investigation.
Nearly six months after her death, the Sheriff’s Department announced the arrest of her husband, 63-year-old Yoon Lai. He was taken into custody Thursday in the nearby city of San Gabriel and is currently being held without bail. Authorities plan to present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday.
The L.A. County Medical Examiner ruled the cause of Gaw-Lai’s death as undetermined following autopsy and toxicology testing. Detectives on the scene had reported her body was severely burned, complicating early forensic analysis.

Friends told ABC7 News neighbors were left stunned by the tragedy. Gaw-Lai, a licensed endocrinologist known professionally as Irene Gaw Gonzalo, was remembered as a dedicated physician and loving mother of twin boys. Her patients posted heartfelt tributes online.
“Amazing Endocrinologist! So sad for her loss. The staff was just as likable and professional as her, which is really hard to find in the medical industry,” wrote one patient on Yelp. “I miss her so much, and still trying to take in the tragic loss to the industry. I knew my health was on a positive path because of her.”
Neighbors described the couple’s relationship as troubled. Gaw-Lai had filed for divorce in August 2024, citing minor children in the petition. Court records show she had previously filed for divorce from Lai in 2003.

On the day of the fire, Yoon Lai told investigators he had taken the couple’s sons to baseball practice and returned home to find the house ablaze, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Steven De Jong. The timeline and circumstances surrounding his account later came under scrutiny by investigators.
As the legal process moves forward, the community continues to mourn the loss of a respected doctor and devoted mother whose life ended in violence.
