Girlfriend’s ex-husband shoots and kills California boxing circuit fighter before turning gun on himself

A promising young boxer from California has been fatally shot by his girlfriend’s ex-husband, who then took his own life in a chilling murder-suicide that unfolded in less than 10 minutes. Adrian Valdovinos, 25, was killed in the early hours of Sunday morning at a home in Hanford, California.

The suspected shooter, Vincent Diaz, 33, broke into the residence of his ex-wife who was also Valdovinos’ girlfriend before opening fire and ultimately turning the gun on himself. A 911 call was placed at 4:12 a.m. reporting a man and a woman fighting, followed by the sound of several gunshots. As the first officer arrived at the scene, one final shot rang out.

Hanford Police Lieutenant Justin Vallin told that the last shot was Diaz ending his own life — an act officers witnessed after he walked past a window inside the home. Valdovinos was found dead in the bedroom, killed by multiple gunshot wounds. Diaz’s ex-wife was unharmed and safely removed from the property.

“The entire incident happened in less than 10 minutes,” Vallin told KABC. Investigators say the attack was premeditated. Diaz had made arrangements for someone to watch his child before the incident and had parked his vehicle approximately 100 yards from his ex-wife’s home — suggesting he had planned the assault in advance.

Police also confirmed that Diaz had no prior interactions with Valdovinos, indicating the boxer was targeted solely because of his relationship with Diaz’s former wife. The couple had been separated since August 2025, and Diaz’s ex-wife had filed for a restraining order against him as recently as March. As a convicted felon, Diaz was legally prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm.

Neighbors who spoke to KABC described the street as once being filled with laughter and music from the family’s home. Craig Avila, who lived nearby, reflected on the tragedy with disbelief. “You used to be able to hear all of them all the time because they’d be singing and having a great time in the house and all that,” Avila said.

“So, for this to happen… it’s just sad to see.” Valdovinos had been building a reputation as a rising star on the California boxing circuit before his life was cut short. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
