9-Year-Old Ohio Girl Drowns in Pool Surrounded by Adults, Including Dad’s Fiancée

A tragic accident has claimed the life of 9-year-old Ava McCourt, who drowned in a swimming pool in Tiffin, Ohio, on June 28, according to her family and the Seneca County Coroner’s Office.

Ava, who had just begun swimming lessons days prior, was attending a gathering at a pool with about 20 others when the incident occurred. Her aunt, Jaimee Sergent, who was not present at the time, described the heartbreaking chain of events.

“Ava was always eager to learn,” said the Sergeant. “She had just started having swimming lessons with her family.” On the day of the accident, Ava was reportedly walking along the edge of the pool, staying close to those watching her. Despite being surrounded by family and other bystanders, she slipped out of sight in an instant.

“In a split second, she was gone,” the Sergeant said. “Panic immediately set in.” According to WTVG, a woman who had been helping teach Ava to swim told police that once they realized she was missing, everyone around the pool began searching. A visiting grandmother and her 13-year-old grandson ultimately spotted Ava near the bottom of the pool.

Her soon-to-be-stepmother Christina Bryant (pictured together) told police the little girl, who couldn’t swim but was taking lessons, was floating on a pool noodle

The teenager and Ava’s stepmother both jumped into the water to retrieve her. Fortunately, an off-duty EMT happened to be at the pool and immediately began CPR in an attempt to revive the child. Emergency medical services quickly arrived and continued life-saving efforts.

Authorities and emergency responders “did everything within their power” to save Ava, her aunt said. Despite all efforts, Ava was later pronounced dead. The family is now left grieving the loss of a bright, curious young girl, but they find comfort in their faith.

“We take solace in the fact that God was there to hold her hand and take her home,” Sergent said. “Now she’s dancing with the Lord in the stars.” She’s hoping to raise awareness to “prevent another family from this pain,” and she’s also launched a GoFundMe for Ava’s family.

Witnesses told police Ava disappeared under the water in an instant without anyone noticing, or with any splashing or sounds of distress

Ava’s death has deeply shaken the Tiffin community and serves as a painful reminder of how quickly accidents can happen, even with supervision. Her family and friends are remembering her as a joyful child who loved learning, playing, and being with her loved ones.

As the family continues to mourn, tributes and condolences have poured in from across the area. Local officials have not indicated any criminal wrongdoing but have emphasized the importance of vigilance and safety around pools, especially with young children.
