Actor Timothy Busfield and his wife, Melissa Gilbert, are moving into a fragile new phase after he was released on bail this week following serious criminal charges.
Busfield, 68, was released Tuesday, Jan. 20, from the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. He had been arrested a week earlier after surrendering to authorities. Prosecutors have charged him with two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor involving a child under 13 and one count of child abuse. Busfield has denied the allegations.
He appeared in a pretrial detention hearing where the judge ruled he would be released on his own recognisance, with conditions, while he awaits trial. The decision brought visible relief to his family, who were present in court.
After the hearing, Busfield’s attorney spoke with People about his client’s state of mind. The lawyer said the actor “feels wonderful,” adding, “He can reunite with Melissa,” and noting that Gilbert, 61, is “very, very excited.”
Gilbert attended the hearing in support of her husband and was visibly emotional when the judge ordered his release. Witnesses in the courtroom reported that she cried and said, “Thank you, God”, after the ruling. Also present were Gilbert’s mother, Barbara Cowan, 89, her son Michael Boxleitner, and Busfield’s brother, Buck, signalling a strong family presence behind the actor.
Gilbert has already made clear where she stands. Through her representative, Ame Van Iden, she previously issued a statement that read, “Melissa stands with and supports her husband.” Those close to the actress say she firmly believes in his innocence and has chosen to remain by his side as the case proceeds.
Busfield has also publicly denied the accusations. In a statement addressing the allegations, he said he “did not do anything to those little boys, and I’m gonna fight it.” His legal team is expected to challenge the charges as the case moves toward its next phase in court.
The situation has drawn attention not only because of the seriousness of the allegations but also because of the couple’s public profiles. Busfield is known for roles in projects such as The West Wing, while Gilbert has been a familiar face since her days as a child star and later as a prominent television actress and advocate within the entertainment industry.
For now, Busfield remains out of custody under the court’s conditions as he prepares for the legal process ahead. The case is still in its early stages, and no trial date has been announced. As proceedings continue, both Busfield and Gilbert appear focused on presenting a united front, leaning on family support as they navigate what is likely to be a long and highly scrutinised legal battle.
