Sydney Sweeney maintained her professionalism on set even while enduring a difficult breakup with her then-fiancé, Jonathan Davino. The 27-year-old actress was filming her upcoming thriller The Housemaid at the time and, according to director Paul Feig, she never let personal struggles affect her work.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Feig commended Sweeney for her complete dedication. “She was completely present emotionally,” he said, noting that the Euphoria star was “just up for anything, and really didn’t bring any issues to set.”
Feig acknowledged that Sydney Sweeney was quietly coping with the end of her engagement but said she managed the situation with poise. “I’d say, ‘Hey, are you OK?’ and she’d go, ‘I’m fine, I’m great!’ but not defensively,” he recalled. He described her as someone who “loves to work,” a description Sweeney herself confirmed during the interview.
When the conversation turned to her business relationship with Davino, however, Sweeney kept her answer short. The two co-founded the production company Fifty-Fifty Films in 2020, but when asked whether they still collaborate, she declined to elaborate.
“I’m going to keep all of my personal stuff out of it,” she said. Reports in March revealed that Sweeney and Davino had ended their engagement in January. The couple, who began dating in 2018, was seen looking tense while leaving a New York City hotel during one of her filming breaks earlier that month.
A source told PEOPLE that Sweeney was professionally “where she wants to be” but felt weighed down by the demands of her personal life. She had been planning a May wedding, but according to the insider, she felt “overwhelmed” and ultimately “didn’t feel right” about moving forward. The source added she was not “ready to settle down.”
Though the pair were spotted having a quiet lunch together in Los Angeles in April, their reunion appeared brief. Sweeney kept a low profile during the outing, concealing herself in a hoodie and sunglasses. For now, Sweeney seems to be channeling her attention into her career.
With multiple projects lined up, she has made it clear she prefers to keep her private life separate from her work. Her ability to stay focused under pressure, according to Feig, is what makes her stand out. On set, he said, she showed resilience, discipline, and the kind of commitment that allowed her personal challenges to remain off-camera.
