Stevie Wonder, the iconic musician and voice of a generation, has once again reminded us why he’s as admired for his wisdom as he is for his music. On 9 July, he addressed those long-running conspiracy theories questioning whether he’s truly blind, and his response couldn’t have been more powerful.
“You know the truth. The truth is, shortly after my birth I became blind,” Wonder told the audience during a heartfelt moment. “That was a blessing because it allowed me to see the world in a vision of truth, of sight, see people in the spirit of them, not how they look, not what color they are, but what color is their spirit.”

It was classic Stevie — sincere, thoughtful, and cutting straight to the core of what matters. But he wasn’t finished. In an especially moving part of his speech, he shared a personal prayer he’d offered up just days before.
“I was saying my prayers, and I said, ‘God, you know, I’ve always said that I am very thankful for everything. The only thing I would like, not for me, but for me to continue doing the work that I need to do in the spirit of what you are about, the spirit of you. I want to see the world so I can walk around the world and see things and let people see how blind they have been.’”
It was a touching blend of humility, purpose, and a subtle dig at those who doubt him.
Social media has, over the years, been a breeding ground for conspiracy theories, and Wonder’s blindness has bizarrely been one of them. Some users have speculated that he can actually see, often citing completely unfounded reasons.

The chatter picked up again during last year’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago, when Wonder took the stage and a teleprompter was placed nearby. This sparked fresh rumblings, even though journalist Ben Jacobs, who was reporting live from the event, confirmed via Times Now that the teleprompter wasn’t even on.

So, to set the record straight, Stevie Wonder has never hidden the fact that he’s blind. And instead of indulging the nonsense, he’s used it to remind us of the deeper kind of vision that truly matters.
Of course, Stevie Wonder needs no defending. He’s one of the greatest music legends to ever live. With more than 100 million records sold globally, 25 Grammy Awards, and countless honours — including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a Golden Globe, an Academy Award, and spots in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame — his legacy is sealed.
