Shakira and Jason Aldean’s concerts canceled unexpectedly moments ahead of show

Fans were left disappointed and scrambling for refunds after concerts by Shakira, Jason Aldean, and Brooks & Dunn at Boston’s Fenway Park were abruptly canceled just hours before showtime this week. The news broke on social media late Wednesday, May 29, through official posts on Fenway Concerts’ accounts on X and Instagram.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Shakira and Jason Aldean, and Brooks & Dunn performances originally scheduled for May 29th and May 30th, respectively, at Fenway Park have been canceled,” the statement read. “Refunds will be available at your point of purchase. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

Shakira was slated to perform on Thursday, May 29, while country stars Aldean and Brooks & Dunn were set to co-headline the following evening, Friday, May 30. Neither the artists nor Fenway Park initially offered any details about what led to the last-minute cancellations, sparking confusion and speculation among ticket holders.

However, TMZ later reported that Boston Inspectional Services halted the events over concerns related to building safety. According to a statement shared with Boston’s WHDH, concert promoter Live Nation said, “During a routine pre-show check, structural elements were identified as not being up to standard… So the shows were canceled,” PEOPLE confirmed.

Social media comments added fuel to the fire, with one user claiming insider knowledge: “I know someone who works there. The stage roof buckled when trying to mount one of the big screens. It literally happened within the last couple of hours.” Shakira, 48, had already arrived in Boston and had been engaging with fans online.

Just a day prior to the news, she shared her enthusiasm via Instagram Stories, writing, “Hello, Boston! What a sweet welcome!” The cancellations stunned concertgoers who had been eagerly anticipating the shows, with many expressing frustration over the timing of the announcements.

Some had already traveled from out of town and booked accommodations in preparation for the events. While full refunds are being issued, there has been no official word on rescheduled dates. Fans are now holding out hope that the artists will return to Fenway under safer and more secure conditions.

The cancellations mark a rare disruption for Fenway Park’s popular summer concert series and serve as a reminder of the crucial role safety inspections play in live entertainment events, even when they bring disappointment to thousands.
