“Rocked Too Hard… Ended Up in a Cast!”: Elton John Pranks Fans With Hospital Photos to Promote Spinal Tap II

Sir Elton John had fans in a panic this week after sharing photos on Instagram that seemed to show him confined to a hospital bed, sporting a glittering cast and a neck brace.

The images appeared serious enough to spark an outpouring of concern. Well-wishers filled the comments with messages of love and support. “Get better soon with the Favor of God, Sir Elton John,” one fan wrote. Another added, “Sending you love. Your music got me through a lot of dark times.”

In the photos, John was shown surrounded by flowers and get-well cards, with his husband David Furnish at his side. For many, the scene looked like genuine evidence of a health crisis.

But as it turned out, the 77-year-old music icon was perfectly fine. The dramatic display was part of a tongue-in-cheek promotion for the new film Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. John himself revealed the ruse in a caption that read, “Rocked too hard… ended up in a cast! Backstage with Spinal Tap.”

He went on to explain his cameo in the mockumentary sequel. “The new film, Spinal Tap II, and album are out today, featuring me on ‘Listen To The Flower People’ and ‘Stonehenge.’ Thanks for having me be a part of it!”

The post didn’t stop at still photos. It also included behind-the-scenes clips showing cameras rolling on set, shots of the glimmering casts being removed, and glimpses of John in on the joke.

Reactions from fans ranged from relief to playful frustration. “ELTON DOESN’T SCARE US LIKE THAT,” one commenter exclaimed. Another admitted, “Scared me for a minute there. So glad you’re ok.”

Even the official Spinal Tap account joined in, quoting one of the band’s famously over-the-top lines: “That’s just the Majesty of Rock!”

Though some may have briefly believed the singer was injured, the stunt succeeded in drawing attention to both the film and its soundtrack. For Elton John, who has long mixed showmanship with humor, the gag was another reminder of his ability to keep audiences guessing.

The sequel, which follows up on the cult classic This Is Spinal Tap, brings back the mock-rock legends for another round of musical absurdity—this time with Elton John along for the ride.
