Bill Cosby’s On-Screen Son, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Known for Playing Theo Huxtable on ‘The Cosby Show,’ Dies at 54

Bill Cosby is publicly mourning the tragic death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who famously played Theo Huxtable, his onscreen son, on The Cosby Show. Warner, 54, died in a drowning accident while vacationing in Costa Rica, a loss that has deeply shaken those closest to him, including Cosby, who considered Warner like family.

Shortly after news of Warner’s death broke, Cosby, now 88, shared his sorrow through his representative, Andrew Wyatt. According to Wyatt, receiving the call about Warner’s passing was as devastating for Cosby as learning of the 1997 murder of his own son, Ennis Cosby, who was shot during a failed robbery attempt.

Cosby was reminded of the special bond Warner and Ennis once shared, telling E! News through Wyatt that the two “were amazing together.” Reflecting on Warner’s life and career, Cosby praised the actor for his cultural impact and lasting legacy beyond his role in the beloved 1980s sitcom.

He believed Warner’s portrayal of Theo Huxtable inspired countless viewers and contributed significantly to the show’s enduring popularity. Speaking to New York’s 6ABC, Cosby fondly remembered Warner’s work ethic on set. “You could depend on Malcolm always going to the shelter, to learn his lines, to gather his character to come out and be ready,” Cosby recalled.

“When the news came, it was shocking.” Cosby also expressed heartfelt sympathy for Warner’s mother. “Of course, my thoughts went straight to his mother, who worked so hard. She was so wonderful with him,” he said. The tragic incident occurred on July 20, when Warner was swimming in the ocean off Costa Rica.

According to a translated statement from Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency, “the victim appears to have entered the sea and was apparently swept away by a current.” Witnesses managed to pull Warner back to shore, where members of the Costa Rican Red Cross attempted life-saving measures. Sadly, Warner was declared lifeless at the scene.

Later, the Costa Rican National Police confirmed the official cause of death as asphyxia due to drowning. Warner’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through fans and colleagues alike, with many remembering him not only for his iconic television role but also for his professionalism and positive influence both on and off screen. His passing marks a significant loss for the entertainment industry and for those who grew up watching the Huxtable family.
