Jeff Bezos Makes U-Turn with ‘Lengthy’ Prenup to Protect $220 Billion Fortune After $165 Billion Divorce from First Wife

With a staggering net worth of $220 billion, Jeff Bezos is leaving nothing to chance as he prepares to tie the knot with fiancée Lauren Sánchez. The Amazon founder and third-richest man in the world is reportedly finalizing an extensive prenuptial agreement before the couple officially says “I do.”

Bezos, 61, and Sánchez, 55, became engaged in 2023 during a romantic moment aboard his $500 million superyacht off the coast of Cannes. Sources told MailOnline that the couple is so eager to wed that Bezos would marry Sánchez “tomorrow” if his legal team would allow it—but not until every legal detail is secured.

Given his enormous fortune and wide-ranging business holdings, Bezos is relying on an army of legal experts to craft a bulletproof prenup, particularly after his first marriage to MacKenzie Scott ended without one. Bezos and Scott married in 1993, long before Amazon became the global tech powerhouse it is today. When they divorced 25 years later, Scott was awarded a four percent stake in Amazon, propelling her to a net worth of $165.3 billion, according to Forbes.

Legal experts suggest Bezos is determined to avoid a repeat of that scenario. “Their prenup would primarily focus on protecting Jeff Bezos’ vast holdings acquired before his marriage,” explained one attorney. “There will be a clear enumeration of all business assets and ownership interests, stating that these would be considered Jeff Bezos’ separate property.”

Another legal specialist added, “A common feature of this type of prenup is to say that no matter how much labor or work goes into any business asset, the acquisition remains entirely separate. This type of agreement requires complete and total disclosure from both parties.”

The process, experts say, is both complex and time-consuming. Bezos is likely covering the cost of Sánchez’s legal representation, even though her attorneys are duty-bound to act solely in her best interest.

“A prenup at this level of wealth is a substantial undertaking,” one lawyer noted. “It involves a legion of high-priced attorneys and financial advisors working not just in the U.S., but in every jurisdiction where Mr. Bezos owns assets. The challenge lies in ensuring global enforceability, clarity around private investments, and maintaining strict confidentiality.”

Reports indicate that the wedding is planned for next month, suggesting that after months of legal back-and-forth, the couple may have already signed the agreement and are now focused on their much-anticipated celebration.
