Arnold Schwarzenegger Was Just 10 When He Knew He Had to Move to America

Arnold Schwarzenegger says his love affair with America began long before he set foot on its soil — and long before he became a household name. In a candid interview with The Wall Street Journal, the Austrian-born icon shared that his fascination with the United States started when he was just ten years old.

At the time, he was living in a small village in post-war Austria, but he was already dreaming big. “At age ten, I fell in love with America,” Schwarzenegger revealed. “That came from watching film rolls in school. The teacher would advance the strips by turning a knob, showing one image at a time. I was blown away.”

Those images, he recalled, painted a dazzling portrait of a world far removed from his own. “They were about things like the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, and cars with huge fins driving on U.S. highways with six lanes on each side. All of it was over the top.”

Schwarzenegger, who would go on to become a seven-time Mr. Olympia, international movie star, and governor of California, said those childhood impressions stayed with him and shaped his destiny. While bodybuilding was his entry point into fame, his heart was always set on a bigger dream.

“I’d never seen anything like it, the glamor, the lights, and the houses,” he said. “I said to myself, ‘What am I doing here?’ I wanted to be in America and to become famous and rich.” He pursued bodybuilding with relentless discipline, but the gym was never the final destination — it was a stepping stone to Hollywood.

His rise in the world of fitness gave him the platform, but it was his ambition, charisma, and sheer determination that propelled him onto the big screen. Schwarzenegger admitted that while he was consumed by his training, his imagination was elsewhere. “He spent most of his time working out while dreaming of seeing himself on the big screen,” the Journal noted.

From The Terminator to Total Recall, and from the bodybuilding stage to political office, Schwarzenegger’s journey embodies the classic immigrant success story — one fueled by early dreams, unwavering focus, and a love for a country he once only saw in flickering school film reels. His story is a powerful reminder that ambition, no matter how improbable, can cross oceans — and turn dreams into a legacy.
