New Hampshire’s Republican Governor Chris Sununu expressed concerns about Vice President Kamala Harris’ readiness ahead of next week’s debate, warning that her “honeymoon” phase is over and Americans expect more accountability from their leaders.
Appearing on Your World with Neil Cavuto Thursday, Sununu remarked that while “August was a great honeymoon period” for Harris, she is now facing increased scrutiny. “She’s back home,” he said, adding that Americans want to see competence and leadership from their leaders.
Sununu described the upcoming debate as a “pivotal” moment, emphasizing that it won’t just be about policy but also about who can “hold their own, show their professionalism, [and] show a sense of leadership for the country.” He speculated that Democrats are concerned about how Harris might perform, told Raw Story.
“They don’t let her talk to the press,” Sununu said. “She’s going to get into these circular arguments of gobbledygook, and God knows what she’s going to say.”
Sununu went on to argue that Harris’ team has done her a “massive disservice” by not allowing her more media interactions. “You get better at a debate, you get better at answering questions when you interact with the press, when you get the feedback when you feel more confident on your toes,” he said.
Sununu’s comments come just a week after Harris sat down for her first interview as the Democratic presidential nominee with CNN’s Dana Bash. In the interview, Harris addressed a range of topics, including her day-one priorities and her evolving stance on fracking.
As Harris heads into a critical debate, Sununu’s remarks underscore the mounting pressure on her to demonstrate leadership and command of key issues while dispelling concerns about her communication skills.
