California man accused of strangling his 2-year-old son to death after girlfriend fights him off

A 33-year-old California man has been charged with murder and attempted murder after allegedly strangling his 2-year-old son to death in what authorities believe was a planned attempt to kill his entire family — an effort that was cut short only when his girlfriend woke up and fought back.

Adrian Joseph Lujan was arrested following a manhunt that stretched across two counties and ended with a physical confrontation with deputies. He has since allegedly confessed to killing his son during a police interview, according to the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident unfolded in the early hours at a residence in the 100 block of The Alameda in San Juan Bautista, a small city roughly 45 miles south of San Jose. Emergency dispatchers received a call reporting a baby not breathing. When medics arrived at the scene, they found the toddler unconscious and unresponsive. He was rushed to a children’s hospital, where doctors later pronounced him dead.

According to investigators, Lujan’s 34-year-old girlfriend was asleep when he allegedly woke her and began strangling her. She managed to fight him off, at which point he fled the apartment in a Ford Fusion. Frantically searching for her 2-year-old, she found the boy not in his bed but lying on the couch — blue and unconscious. Her 4-year-old child was also in the apartment but was found unharmed. She immediately called 911.

Law enforcement launched a manhunt for Lujan. Using traffic camera footage, deputies tracked him to neighboring Merced County, where they pursued him and took him into custody following a physical struggle.

During subsequent questioning by detectives, Lujan allegedly admitted to killing his son. Authorities have not yet publicly established a clear motive for the attack, but investigators believe the assault on the girlfriend was not an isolated act of violence.

San Benito County Sheriff Eric Taylor told local ABC/NBC affiliate KSBW that the evidence points to a far more sinister intent. “We’re still picking apart what his motive would have been to do this,” Taylor said. “We do believe that he planned to kill his entire family before being interrupted based on his statement.”

The implication is stark — had the girlfriend not woken up and successfully fought Lujan off, the outcome could have been far worse. Her quick response in calling emergency services also ensured that her 4-year-old was kept safe.

Lujan is currently being held at San Benito Jail and faces charges of murder and attempted murder. Authorities indicated that child endangerment charges may also be added. His next court date had not been listed at the time of reporting.

The case has sent shockwaves through the quiet community of San Juan Bautista, a city of just a few thousand residents that rarely sees violent crime of this nature. Investigators continue to work through the details of what led Lujan to allegedly carry out the attack, though those answers may take time to fully emerge.

The toddler’s death serves as a devastating reminder of how quickly domestic violence can escalate into tragedy — and how a single act of resistance can mean the difference between life and death.
