President Donald Trump ignited a firestorm among his own supporters Monday after sharing an AI-generated image on social media depicting himself in the likeness of Jesus Christ drawing swift condemnation from conservative Christians who called the post blasphemous and demanded its immediate removal.
The image, posted on Truth Social, shows Trump dressed in a white robe and red sash attire long associated with depictions of Jesus Christ in centuries of European religious art. In the picture, Trump appears to be healing a sick man, his hands glowing with light.
The backlash was immediate and came from some of Trump’s most prominent allies. Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was among the first to respond, writing to her 1.7 million followers on X: “It’s more than blasphemy. It’s an Antichrist spirit.”
Christian influencer Mandy Arthur, who regularly engages her 34,000 followers on faith and politics, did not hold back either. “God, we might have made a mistake and [accidentally] elected the Antichrist. Send help,” she wrote.
Conservative activist and Turning Point USA contributor Riley Gaines echoed the concern, questioning the president’s judgment. “Why? Seriously, I cannot understand why he’d post this,” she wrote to her 1.6 million followers. “Either way, two things are true: a little humility would serve him well; God shall not be mocked.”
The criticism wasn’t limited to public figures. On Truth Social itself, ordinary supporters piled on. One user, “Fight4FreedomUSMC,” whose comment garnered nearly 3,000 likes, wrote: “Mr. President, with all due respect. TAKE THIS DOWN. You are not Jesus. Even if this wasn’t the intention, this is not a good look, I do not support this and I know many others do not either.”
Another commenter demanded accountability: “Remove it at once. You’ve probably already done too much damage with this meme. Give all honor, glory and praise to Jesus, but certainly NOT this. If it’s a staffer, fire them and offer an apology to Christians for this mockery.”
Daily Wire culture reporter Megan Basham voiced outright bewilderment. “I don’t know if the President thought he was being funny or if he is under the influence of some substance or what possible explanation he could have for this OUTRAGEOUS blasphemy,” she wrote to her 200,000 followers. “But he needs to take this down immediately and ask for forgiveness from the American people and then from God.”
The post arrived just hours after Trump had publicly criticized Pope Leo XIV, calling him “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy” adding yet another layer of controversy to an already turbulent day on the religious and political front.
