Hilary Duff Opens Up About Infamous ‘Gossip Girl’ Scene with Penn Badgley

Hilary Duff may always be associated with her wholesome Disney image as Lizzie McGuire, but the actress once surprised audiences with a much more daring role on the hit teen drama Gossip Girl.

Looking back on her brief appearance in the show’s third season, Duff recently reflected on the moment that sparked major discussion among viewers. She played Olivia Burke, a famous actress who becomes involved in a complicated storyline with Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) and Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr).

During an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Duff admitted that one particular scene from her time on the show still stands out years later. “Probably the threesome was the most standout moment,” she said while discussing her role on the popular series.

The storyline featured a controversial scene involving Olivia, Dan, and Vanessa that quickly became one of the season’s most talked-about moments. Duff also joked that she anticipated a reaction from her family after filming the scene, given her long-standing reputation as a Disney Channel star.

She recalled thinking at the time, “Oh, my mom’s going to call me after this one.” Although Duff’s appearance on Gossip Girl lasted only one season, the character left a lasting impression on fans and remains closely associated with her career outside of her Disney roots.

The actress shared that people still remember her role years later, sometimes in unexpected places. Duff recalled a moment while travelling in Paris when a flight attendant recognised her from the show and asked, “Are you on Gossip Girl?”

The controversial scene had already generated attention even before the episode aired in 2009. Promotional clips teasing the storyline sparked criticism from some media watchdog groups.

The Parents Television Council publicly protested the episode and urged television affiliates to block its broadcast, arguing that the storyline was inappropriate for a teen drama.

Despite the backlash and calls for censorship, the CW network ultimately went ahead with airing the episode as planned. The scene featuring Olivia, Dan, and Vanessa quickly became one of the most widely discussed moments in the series and helped cement Gossip Girl’s reputation for pushing boundaries and embracing provocative storylines.

For Duff, the role represented a major shift from the family-friendly image she built earlier in her career. While she had already begun transitioning into more mature roles at the time, the storyline still surprised many fans who remembered her primarily as the upbeat Disney character Lizzie McGuire.

More than a decade later, the moment continues to stand out in pop culture discussions surrounding the series. Even after years of new projects and roles, Duff’s brief but memorable appearance on Gossip Girl remains one of the most talked-about chapters in her career.
