Journalist Michael Wolff says President Donald Trump’s latest State of the Union address revealed something troubling about how he views the world.
Wolff, who has written four books about Trump, shared his thoughts during a recent episode of the podcast Inside Trump’s Head, which he co-hosts with Joanna Coles of The Daily Beast. In the discussion, he argued that the speech highlighted a deeper disconnect between Trump’s perspective and broader political reality.
Trump, 79, has faced criticism from some psychologists who have publicly speculated about his mental fitness. Wolff did not make a medical diagnosis, but suggested that the speech reflected a pattern he believes is becoming more pronounced.
According to Wolff, the address showed how Trump and his supporters interpret events through a lens shaped by personal belief rather than shared facts.

“That was a subtext of the State of the Union and another indicative aspect … We see the world the way we want to see it, even though everybody else sees it differently and knows that it is differently,” Wolff said.
He argued that this divide between perception and reality could be politically significant.
“So, again, the State of the Union was Trump’s reality. And then there’s true reality, which is reflected everywhere, but specifically in recent polls, which are devastating to Trump,” he added.
Recent polling presents a mixed picture. Some surveys suggest Trump saw a modest bump in approval ratings following the speech, rising from roughly 39 percent to more than 41 percent. At the same time, other polls indicate continued challenges on major issues such as the economy and immigration.
Wolff described the moment as potentially pivotal.
“It’s a totally fascinating moment because it is potentially that inflection moment,” he said. “He can’t get anything right. And he can’t even find the rhetoric to create a kind of consistent opposition to all of these things that are going wrong.”
The comments reflect an ongoing debate about Trump’s leadership style and political messaging, especially as he continues to address supporters in high-profile appearances.
While reactions to the State of the Union remain divided, Wolff’s analysis underscores how differently the speech has been interpreted by critics and supporters alike.
