Prince Harry’s legal battles took another serious turn this week as he was hit with a stark warning about the financial implications of his ongoing privacy case. While the Duke of Sussex was recently buoyed by news that his security protocol is being reviewed by the UK Home Office for the first time in six years, another of his legal pursuits has put him at risk of significant financial consequences.
Harry, alongside six other high-profile claimants, is involved in a £38m privacy lawsuit against DailyMail and its publisher, Associated Newspapers, over allegations of illicit information gathering. On Tuesday, judges overseeing the case issued a warning about the major costs the claimants could face if the case doesn’t go in their favor.
According to The Telegraph, Judge David Cook and Mr. Justice Nicklin made it clear that the claimants could collectively face up to £14.1m in legal fees if they lose the case. The ruling emphasized that the claimants, including Harry, should fully understand the financial risks involved.
The judges stated, “If that means the individual claimants need to reassess their ATE [after the event insurance] cover, that can only be in their own best interests.” They also added, “It is particularly important that this issue is addressed at this point as substantial costs have already been incurred and the parties will soon be incurring more substantial costs in preparation for the trial next year.”
This warning has highlighted the financial pressure mounting on Harry and his fellow claimants. As the case proceeds, there is growing concern over the potential costs if they do not succeed in their lawsuit against the Daily Express.
While Harry waits for the outcome of his security review, expected next month, he is also facing the ongoing legal battle against GB News publishers, which will also go to trial around the same time. Both cases are expected to have significant implications for Harry, not only legally but also financially.
