Jada Pinkett Smith is now at the center of a high-profile legal fight. A $3 million lawsuit filed by Bilaal Salaam, a former associate of Will Smith, accuses her of threatening him and organizing a smear campaign after a confrontation in September 2021 at Will’s birthday celebration.
According to the Nov. 7 filing obtained by E! News, the tension began at the party. “Defendant Jada Pinkett Smith approached Plaintiff with approximately seven members of her entourage, became verbally aggressive,” the suit claims, “and threatened Plaintiff by stating that if he continued ‘telling her personal business,’ he would ‘end up missing or catch a bullet,’ and demanded he sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) ‘or else.’”
The filing also says one of her associates followed him to his car while making additional threats. Salaam’s long friendship with Will Smith is described in the actor’s 2021 memoir Will.

The lawsuit says the conflict resurfaced after the 2022 Academy Awards. Following the moment Will Smith slapped Chris Rock onstage, Salaam alleges he was asked to help with crisis management. He declined the request, stating in his filing that “his conscience would not allow him to be involved in any cover-up or deceptive PR campaign.”
Salaam claims that his refusal triggered retaliation. He says a “campaign was launched against him, including threats from individuals closely associated with Will and Jada,” and that the situation intensified after the couple learned he was preparing a “whistleblower memoir” about his past work with the family. Fearing for his safety, he says he began giving public interviews to protect himself and to create a visible record of events.
The suit alleges that Jada responded by escalating the conflict. Salaam says she “intentionally and maliciously engaged in a smear campaign through nationally broadcast interviews” that targeted his credibility and motives. In the complaint, he accuses her of intentional infliction of emotional distress on three separate occasions and lists further claims of “extreme and outrageous conduct.” Among those claims are accusations that she attempted to “intimidate, bribe, and suppress” him.

Salaam is seeking $3 million in special damages and is also requesting general, punitive, and exemplary damages. His filing asks the court to require Jada to “issue a public retraction of the false and defamatory statements made about Plaintiff, including the false accusations of a money shakedown and extortion.”
The case adds another layer of scrutiny to an already high-visibility family, and it is expected to draw continued public attention as it moves through the legal system.
