Expert Says Meeting Between King Charles and Sussex Children Remains Unlikely

King Charles appeared to take a meaningful step toward reconciliation in September when he welcomed Prince Harry for a nearly hour-long “private tea” at Clarence House. It was the first significant thaw in their two-year estrangement, and the Duke of Sussex has since kept in steady contact with his father. Now, Harry is hoping for a second meeting, one that could finally allow his children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, to reconnect with their grandfather.

The possibility has attracted attention because Charles is confirmed to travel to the United States for a historic State Visit in spring 2026, marking the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding. The White House and Buckingham Palace are already coordinating schedules, and the trip is expected to be highly ceremonial and tightly planned.

The timing has raised a question many have been asking for years: will the King finally meet his Montecito-based grandchildren? Harry has repeatedly argued that the UK remains unsafe for his family, and he has recently written again to the UK Home Secretary requesting a security reassessment after a stalker incident heightened concerns.

Even so, royal expert Jennie Bond believes a reunion is unlikely during the King’s upcoming U.S. tour. She suggested that Harry should not expect a private family moment during such a high-profile diplomatic visit. As Bond told The Mirror, “I can’t think that the King would fly across the whole country to visit Harry and his family in California,” noting that State Visits are “incredibly busy.”

Bond said there is a slim chance the Sussexes could travel to wherever the King and Queen are based during the visit. “I’m sure Charles would love to meet his grandchildren again, and so I suppose it’s conceivable that the Sussexes could take a flight to New York, or wherever the King and Queen are based, for a brief reunion,” she said.

But she also explained why such a meeting would be complicated. Any encounter between the monarch and the Sussexes would immediately overshadow the purpose of the visit. “Inevitably draw the headlines away from the purpose of the visit,” she warned, adding that official trips are not the right moment to repair strained relationships.

Bond also emphasised that Harry and Meghan would likely be asked to avoid the spotlight altogether as Charles carries out his duties abroad. The couple, she said, would be “encouraged to keep a low profile during the trip.” For now, hopes for a family reunion will depend on timing, logistics and whether both sides decide a meeting is worth the attention it would attract.
