Iowa Child Saves Mother from Violent Captivity with Simple Note to School Bus Driver

In a heroic act, a child in Iowa may have saved their mother’s life by passing a note to a school bus driver that simply read, “Call 911.”

The incident occurred early Wednesday, September 24, just before 7:30 a.m., when the student handed the note to the driver. According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO), the bus driver immediately contacted authorities, and police were dispatched to a home in Westgate, a rural area in Fayette County, reported WCIA.

When officers arrived at the home, they discovered that the child’s mother was allegedly being held captive by 29-year-old Glenroy Miller, a man from the Bahamas. Miller is accused of physically assaulting the woman throughout the night, kicking her with such force that it broke two of her ribs and punctured her lung, according to authorities.

The mother, unable to call for help while the suspect was present, cleverly passed a note to her child, who then took it to the bus driver. The child is currently in first grade, as reported in a legal complaint.

Thanks to the quick thinking of both the child and the bus driver, authorities were able to intervene before further harm could be done.

Miller was arrested that morning and now faces multiple charges, including armed kidnapping, willful injury, domestic abuse assault with the intent to cause serious injury, and obstruction of emergency communications, according to court records.

The child’s courageous act in passing the note may have been the key to saving their mother’s life, highlighting the incredible bravery and quick thinking of both the young student and the school staff.
