Authorities in Harris County are investigating the death of a 28-year-old Marine veteran who was initially thought to have been the victim of a hit-and-run before evidence revealed he had been shot.
Quoc Nguyen was discovered unresponsive late Thursday night, around 11 p.m., in the 13700 block of Lakewood Forest near Cypresswood. According to deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Nguyen had suffered at least one gunshot wound.
A passing motorist spotted Nguyen lying on the side of the road and immediately called 911. The driver, described as a Good Samaritan, began CPR while guided by an emergency operator over the phone. First responders arrived within minutes and continued life-saving measures, but Nguyen was pronounced dead at the scene after losing significant amounts of blood.
Investigators later determined that Nguyen had been in a vehicle that rolled out of a nearby apartment complex before coming to a stop and leaving impressions in the grass. Evidence suggests Nguyen was then dragged from the vehicle and left where he was discovered.
“It was pretty shocking… I’ve been over here like three years and I never saw that before,” said Alexis Dottery, a local resident. Authorities believe someone abandoned Nguyen and drove off in the vehicle he had been traveling in. A wooden cross has since been placed at the site where he died, marking the spot as investigators continue their work.
Detectives are now treating the case as a homicide and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with Crime Stoppers, which is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for tips that lead to an arrest. Officials have indicated that suspects could face capital murder charges if apprehended.
Nguyen, who lived in the area, had served in the Marine Corps, adding another layer of sorrow to the tragedy. Neighbors expressed shock at the violence occurring in what is usually described as a quiet part of northwest Harris County.
The investigation remains active, with deputies combing through surveillance footage from the neighborhood and speaking to potential witnesses. Authorities have not released details on possible suspects or motives. On a GoFundMe page set up by Nguyen’s family, his siblings said that he was “unarmed and defenseless” when he was killed, and that his death meant a loss of financial support for his family.
They said, “Our family will remember him as a hero in many ways.” Residents are urged to remain alert and report anything unusual that may help bring closure to Nguyen’s family. For now, the community is left reeling from the sudden loss of a young veteran whose life ended violently on a quiet suburban street.
