A 47-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of his wife’s lover, Sione Paletua, a father of seven. Seniola Kafoa was convicted of manslaughter in the May death of 53-year-old Paletua.
Prosecutor Frank Loyd called the 20-year sentence appropriate, stating, “Sentencing him to prison, Your Honor, is the only appropriate sentence in this case. It will send a message not only to the defendant, but to the people of Maui that you don’t get a pass to kill someone because your wife was cheating.”
The incident took place on July 20, 2024, in Maui, Hawaii, when police officers responded to a scene and found Paletua unconscious, suffering from a severe injury to his arm. A tourniquet was applied, but Paletua was pronounced dead at the hospital, as per reports from Hawaii News Now.
A witness at the scene told police they saw Kafoa standing over Paletua before fleeing in a Honda, which was later found abandoned. Kafoa was arrested for second-degree murder after it was revealed that he attacked Paletua with a machete after discovering that Paletua was having an affair with his wife.
Defense attorney David Pullman argued that the 20-year sentence was not the answer, suggesting Kafoa should find a way to make amends for his actions. “Maybe he is a good father, but he’s not a good friend, and he was not being a good person at that time,” Pullman said. He added, “I wish our society could come up with better solutions because it’s a waste. It’s a waste of another life.

One life was already lost, and now another life is going to be spent in prison.” Initially charged with murder, Kafoa was convicted of manslaughter, a verdict that disappointed Paletua’s family. “One day he will have to meet his maker, the man above, and he will have to answer to him on why he did what he did,” said Paletua’s oldest daughter, Mafileo.
The family had already experienced deep loss, having lost their mother to cancer in 2011. “We had already lost our mom, and just knowing that in this crazy world, we still had our dad at least,” Mafileo added. Kafoa apologized to Paletua’s family through a Tongan interpreter. “He’s truly sorry to all of you, especially to the family,” said interpreter Ana Malafu.
Circuit Judge Peter Cahill imposed the maximum prison sentence under state law. “It is a horrific death under circumstances that sadly occurred, but the bottom line is, it did happen, and we can’t ignore it,” said Judge Cahill.
Paletua’s children expressed that while the sentence may provide some closure, it will never replace their loss. “You’ve brought a lot of pain to us,” said Mafileo. “You’re only sentenced to 20 years. And my siblings, we’ve been sentenced to life without our dad.”
