Saquon Barkley Surprised by Trump Council Role He Previously Declined

Philadelphia Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley was recently named by President Donald Trump to the newly revived Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. However, Barkley says he declined the offer months ago.

The 28-year-old NFL standout told ESPN that he had been approached “a couple months ago” about joining the council but ultimately chose to pass after discussions with his family. “I felt like I am going to be super busy, so me and my family thought it would probably be of best interest to not accept that,” Barkley said during a post-practice media session at the Eagles’ NovaCare Complex. “I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I’m assuming it’s something great, so I appreciate it, but was a little shocked when my name was mentioned.”

Despite his decision, Barkley’s name appeared on a list of appointees announced by Trump on July 31 when the president signed an executive order reinstating the Presidential Fitness Test and formalizing the new version of the fitness council.

Donald Trump said the revamped council would collaborate with top athletes to “develop bold and innovative fitness goals for young Americans with the aim of fostering a new generation of healthy, active citizens.” The order also referenced former First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, aiming to inspire youth health initiatives across the country.

Alongside Barkley, the president named a slate of high-profile figures to the council, including NHL legend Wayne Gretzky, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and current football stars Harrison Butker, Nick Bosa, and Tua Tagovailoa.

Though surprised by the mention, Barkley emphasized that his relationship with President Trump was not political. He previously played a round of golf with Trump at the former president’s Bedminster, New Jersey golf club, but said it was simply out of respect for the office.

“Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand. Just golfed with Obama not too long ago…and look forward to finishing my round with Trump!” Barkley posted on X, formerly Twitter. After the game, he accompanied Trump to Washington aboard Marine One.

Barkley was also among the Eagles players who visited the White House earlier this year to celebrate the team’s Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite being linked to the council, Barkley has made it clear he won’t be serving in the role, reaffirming his earlier decision to prioritize his professional commitments.
