Eleven People Stabbed in Random Attack at Michigan Walmart

What was supposed to be a normal Saturday afternoon in Traverse City, Michigan, turned terrifying when a man suddenly began stabbing shoppers inside a Walmart. Eleven people were injured, and six of them are in critical condition. Authorities say it appears the attack was completely random.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office said the violence broke out around 4:45 p.m. A 42-year-old man entered the store and used a folding knife to stab people seemingly at random. A sheriff’s deputy responded within minutes and arrested the man. People inside the store also stepped in to help restrain the attacker and assist the victims while they waited for emergency crews.

“Eleven is 11 too many, but thank God it wasn’t more,” said Sheriff Michael Shea, speaking to reporters shortly after the incident.

Outside the Walmart, emergency vehicles crowded the shopping center’s parking lot. The plaza includes several other stores, and police were seen talking to Walmart employees, many of whom still wore their work vests and name tags.

Tiffany DeFell, a 36-year-old from Honor, Michigan, about 25 miles from Traverse City, was in the parking lot when it all happened. “It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out,” she said. “This is something you see out of the movies. It’s not what you expect to see where you’re living.”

All 11 victims were taken to Munson Healthcare, the largest hospital in northern Michigan. The hospital confirmed via social media that they were treating stab wound victims. Megan Brown, a spokesperson for Munson, said Saturday night that six were in critical condition and five were seriously injured.

Sheriff Shea confirmed that the suspect appeared to be a Michigan resident, though no other identifying details were released. Earlier in the day, Michigan State Police said the man was in custody.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a statement offering her condolences and support. “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence,” she said.

Walmart also released a statement expressing concern and promising cooperation with law enforcement. “Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders,” the company said.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino shared on social media that bureau officials were responding to the scene to “provide any necessary support.”

Traverse City, located on the coast of Lake Michigan, is known for its peaceful atmosphere, cherry festival, local wineries, and beautiful views near Sleeping Bear Dunes. But on this summer day, that calm was suddenly shattered.

Authorities are still working to understand what led to the attack, as the community processes how such a brutal act unfolded in a place that usually feels safe.
