Melania Trump Denies Marrying Donald Trump for His Money in Resurfaced Interview

A resurfaced interview from 1999 is once again stirring debate over Melania Trump’s relationship with her husband, President Donald Trump. In the ABC News clip, which has gone viral on social media, Melania addresses the long-standing speculation that she married Trump for his wealth and status.

At the time of the interview, Melania was a 28-year-old model, and Trump, then 52, was a high-profile businessman. Speaking with correspondent Don Dahler, Melania firmly rejected the narrative that she was in the relationship for material gain. “If somebody said, ‘You’re with the man because he’s rich and famous,’ they don’t know me,” she said.

Even before their marriage, the couple’s dynamic drew public scrutiny, and those suspicions have only intensified throughout Trump’s two presidential terms. Critics continue to suggest their relationship is transactional or even loveless. A viral post on X (formerly Twitter) once read, “Don’t feel bad, even Melania hates Trump!”—a sentiment echoed in various clips showing Melania appearing visibly distant or annoyed.

Still, Melania pushed back against such portrayals in the interview. She claimed people don’t really know her—or her husband—and that much of what is assumed about their relationship is inaccurate. She affirmed that she loved Trump and found him to be funny and kind, even commenting on his often-quoted line referring to her as “my supermodel.” Melania explained, “It’s his sense of humor… He’s very kind.”

Despite those comments, speculation has continued well into Trump’s second term. In June 2025, another video compilation was posted online with the caption: “Nobody hates Donald Trump more than Melania Trump. Here’s the proof.” The clips showed Melania appearing withdrawn or cold in various public moments alongside her husband.

Others have pointed to Melania’s reportedly unfavorable prenuptial agreement, which, according to The Washington Post, she later renegotiated. While details of that revised prenup remain unclear, the mystery only fuels further public curiosity and doubt about the nature of their union.

While Melania has defended her marriage and her husband over the years, the public remains divided. But in her own words, “they don’t know me”—and perhaps, that’s the part that continues to intrigue.
