An Oklahoma mother faces second-degree murder charges after authorities say she smothered her 3-month-old son while intoxicated, falling asleep with him and his twin sister on a couch. Spencer Brennan, 33, was arrested in July 2025 following the November 2024 incident that claimed the life of infant Rory Kelson.
According to a Law & Crime report, Brennan admitted to police that she was heavily intoxicated after consuming multiple “tall boy” White Claw Hard Seltzers (20-ounce cans) the night of the tragedy. “I mean, I was drunk enough to just need to pass out,” Brennan stated in the affidavit.
The chain of events began when Brennan and her husband shared a 12-pack of White Claws before putting the twins to bed in their bassinets around 1 a.m. on November 2. However, Brennan later drove to a 7-Eleven, purchased four additional tall boy White Claws, and reportedly drank three before passing out on the couch with both infants, the Oklahoman reported.
The father told KFOR he discovered Rory unresponsive at his wife’s feet around 6:56 a.m. and immediately called 911. Paramedics noted the baby was still warm but not breathing when they arrived at the Mayview Court home. Despite emergency efforts, Rory was pronounced dead at OU Children’s Hospital.

An autopsy revealed the cause of death as “asphyxia due to an unsafe sleep environment,” with investigators noting the infant was likely trapped “between the back and bottom cushions of the couch.” The affidavit emphasized that Brennan’s intoxication directly contributed to the tragedy, stating: “Had [Rory] been left in his bassinet… the probability of the child still being alive would have been increased.”
A child abuse examiner corroborated that Brennan’s decision to drink excessively played a significant role in her son’s death. Brennan remains in custody on $500,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on August 5. The surviving twin was unharmed in the incident.
The case has sparked conversations about co-sleeping risks and parental responsibility, with medical experts reiterating warnings against bed-sharing, especially while impaired. Oklahoma City Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Rory’s preventable death.
