Speaking at her annual Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Block Party in Los Angeles on Saturday, the Oscar winner didn’t miss a beat when addressing the glitzy $50 million wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez that just took over Venice for three full days of billionaire-level celebration.
“I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding,” Theron said onstage, before nailing the punchline:
“But that’s OK because they suck and we’re cool.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the crowd burst into laughter — but Theron didn’t stay on the humor train for long. She quickly shifted into serious territory, using her platform to speak out about urgent global and national issues that hit close to home for her.
“Thank you for taking the time to be a part of this, especially when the world feels like it’s burning because it is.”
Her speech continued with a passionate list of what she sees going wrong in the U.S. and beyond.
“Here in Los Angeles, in the US and across the globe, we’re moving backwards fast. Immigration policy has destroyed the lives of families, not criminals; women’s rights are becoming less and less every day; queer and trans lives are increasingly being erased; and gender-based violence is on the rise.”
“This isn’t just policy, it’s personal,” she said.
As the crowd applauded, Theron wrapped up her thoughts with a bold mic-drop moment:
“Yeah, f–k them.”
Let’s just say, invite or not, Charlize didn’t come to play.
Meanwhile, Bezos and Sánchez’s Venice wedding was basically a celebrity roll call.
