Hayden Daffinson, 34, was charged Wednesday with attempted homicide for allegedly attacking his ex-girlfriend with an axe more than 25 times on Sunday. The violent assault, which occurred on Merrill Avenue in Wisconsin, has also led to seven additional charges, including first-degree sexual assault and mayhem.
During his initial court appearance, bond was set at $5 million. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 31. If convicted on all counts, Daffinson could face over 190 years in prison. Officials warned that further charges may follow as the investigation continues.
According to the criminal complaint, the victim called 911 shortly before 3 p.m., reporting that she had been attacked with an axe. “Victim 1 stated she just broke up with the defendant prior to this occurring, that he was at her house to pick up some of his personal property, and that he attacked her with the hatchet prior to leaving her residence in a red SUV,” the complaint states, as reported by Fox 11 News.
The complaint further alleges that Daffinson sexually assaulted the woman during the encounter. At one point, he reportedly told her, “(Expletive) it, I’m just going to kill you, because I’m going to prison anyway.” He then allegedly struck her more than 25 times with the hatchet, targeting her back, hands, arms, and head.
According to Green Bay ABC affiliate WBAY, The victim suffered severe injuries, including two broken arms, skull fractures, and likely the amputation of a finger. “Victim 1 advised that Daffinson was mad at her because she broke the relationship off, but did not think he would do something like this to her,” the complaint revealed. Following the attack, law enforcement located Daffinson’s vehicle northwest of Milwaukee.
A high-speed chase ensued, with speeds exceeding 110 mph, before police successfully stopped and arrested him. The case has drawn significant attention due to the brutality of the alleged assault and the extensive charges filed. Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active, with the possibility of additional charges as new evidence emerges.
Daffinson remains in custody pending his next court appearance. Prosecutors have indicated they will pursue the maximum penalties given the severity of the crimes. Meanwhile, the victim continues to recover from her injuries as the legal process unfolds.
