Former White House attorney Ty Cobb delivered a blistering critique of President Donald Trump and his administration during a Thursday night CNN interview, sharply rebuking Trump’s tariff policy and mocking his former press secretary.
Cobb, who represented Trump during the Mueller investigation, accused the president of overreaching in his use of executive power, particularly regarding his recent attempt to justify sweeping tariffs under the guise of a national emergency.

“He’s making that up,” Cobb said flatly when asked about Trump’s justification. “He views himself as all-powerful. But just because he says it doesn’t make it so.” The Trump lawyer then launched into a fierce attack on White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, dismissing both her credibility and qualifications.
“I don’t think creepy Karoline, when she speaks, I don’t think anybody in America really takes her seriously on a matter of substance,” Cobb told CNN’s Erin Burnett, referring to Leavitt’s claim that courts should have “no role” in trade decisions. “She’s not, you know, learned by any imagination, and I think her comments are clearly so defensive and so ill-informed that people may largely turn her out. She’s wrong,” Cobb added.
In defense of the judiciary’s role, Cobb made clear that the courts are not overstepping by evaluating the limits of presidential authority. “The statute in question has never in history been used in connection with tariffs,” he explained. “So, I think the likelihood is that this statute will be upheld and enforced in a way that precludes the president from trying to pretend that he has these all-encompassing powers.”

Cobb’s remarks come as legal battles unfold over Trump’s tariff order, which has drawn both political and judicial scrutiny. Critics argue that Trump’s reliance on emergency powers is a broad overreach of executive authority. When asked about the public mockery of Trump via the “TACO” acronym — shorthand for “Tariffs Are Crushing Our economy” — Cobb didn’t hold back.
“I think it bothers him very much,” Cobb said. “He doesn’t take criticism well,” he added, describing Trump’s reactions as those of a “wounded narcissist.” Cobb’s harsh words mark a dramatic shift from his time defending Trump and reflect growing divisions among those once loyal to the president, particularly as Trump faces mounting legal and political challenges.
