Meghan Markle and Princess Kate are no longer believed to be on speaking terms, despite once appearing to enjoy a friendly relationship. In their early public outings together, such as the traditional Sandringham Christmas walkabout and their joint appearance at Wimbledon, the two duchesses, both now 43, were often seen smiling and sharing lighthearted moments.
During Meghan and Prince Harry’s engagement interview with the BBC in 2017, the Duchess of Sussex offered a kind remark about her future sister-in-law. When asked how Prince William and Kate had reacted to meeting her, Meghan replied warmly: “She’s been wonderful.” Prince Harry echoed the sentiment, adding, “Amazing, as has William as well, you know, fantastic support.”
However, in the years since Meghan and Harry stepped back from royal duties in 2020, the couple’s public narrative has shifted, casting their former royal life—and relationships—in a much more critical light. In the 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, the duchess described her first meeting with Kate in a way that suggested a stark cultural mismatch rather than instant warmth.
“I met her [Kate] for the first time, I think we went for dinner. I remember I was in ripped jeans and barefoot,” Meghan recalled. “I was a hugger, I’ve always been a hugger. I didn’t realize that that was jarring for a lot of Brits.” She continued, “I started to understand that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside… that formality carries over on both sides, and that was surprising to me.”

Further tension between the two was revealed in Meghan’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, where she recounted an emotional incident involving Kate just days before her royal wedding. Meghan said the two had a disagreement over flower girl dresses that left her in tears.
“It really hurt my feelings,” she said. “In the context of everything else that was going on… it didn’t make sense to not be just doing whatever everyone else is doing, which was trying to be supportive.” However, Meghan did acknowledge that Kate later apologized and brought her flowers—a gesture she appreciated.
Despite early signs of civility and attempts to maintain family unity, it is widely believed that the relationship between the two duchesses deteriorated further following the release of Prince Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare. Since then, reports suggest that Meghan and Kate have not been in contact, with their bond irreparably damaged following the Sussexes’ royal exit.
