Meghan Markle Opposed Prince Harry’s Costly Legal War Over Security

Meghan Markle may have shown public support for her husband, Prince Harry, during his high-profile legal battle over security arrangements in the UK, but behind closed doors, she reportedly urged him to drop the case.

According to sources cited by The Global Magazine, the Duchess of Sussex was privately opposed to Harry’s decision to appeal a previous ruling denying him the right to pay for police protection while visiting the UK. Meghan allegedly foresaw the financial consequences of losing the case and expressed serious concern about the mounting legal costs.

“Meghan didn’t want Harry to pursue an appeal because if he lost, he would be required to cover legal costs for both sides,” a source told the outlet. “But there was no talking him out of it.”

The Court of Appeal handed down its verdict earlier this month, ruling against Harry, leaving him with a staggering legal bill reportedly nearing $2 million. The decision has been described as “devastating” for the Duke of Sussex and has placed considerable financial strain on the couple.

“This $2 million bill puts a huge amount of pressure on Meghan as well as Harry to make up for the revenue loss,” the source added. “They already run a tight ship financially and don’t have a spare couple of million just sitting in the bank.”

Prince Harry, 39, was visibly disheartened by the court’s ruling and spoke candidly about the issue during an interview with the BBC. His legal challenge centered on his right to fund his police protection during visits to the UK, a need he says stems from credible threats to his safety.

“I was born into this position. I was born into those risks. And they’ve only increased over time,” he said. “I can’t see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the UK.”

Harry and Meghan lost their publicly funded security after stepping down from their senior royal roles in 2020. Since then, the couple has relocated to Montecito, California, and relied on private security arrangements. The Duke has repeatedly argued that the UK government’s decision puts his family at risk.

While Meghan supported Harry’s legal pursuit in public, sources suggest her private reservations about the potential fallout were grounded in practicality. As the financial and emotional toll of the legal defeat unfolds, it appears the Duchess’s concerns may have been well-founded.
