Miley Cyrus Shares Secret Struggle Behind New Year’s Eve Show

Pop star Miley Cyrus has opened up about a serious medical emergency she endured while co-hosting NBC’s Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party in 2023. During a candid interview on the latest episode of The Zane Lowe Show, the singer revealed that she suffered an ovarian cyst rupture during the live event — a health scare she described as “traumatic” and “excruciating.”

“I had a pretty traumatic experience on a show that I was doing with Lorne [Michaels] when I was doing my New Year’s show,” the 32-year-old singer shared during the podcast. Despite the intense pain, the Flowers hitmaker pressed on with the performance.

“I had a medical emergency. I had an ovarian cyst rupture. We didn’t know exactly what was going on, so we did it,” she explained. “It was pretty traumatic because it was extremely excruciating and I did the show anyway. But it was really, really hard on me.”

Cyrus co-hosted the high-profile NBC broadcast alongside her godmother, country legend Dolly Parton. The show featured live performances and appearances from major artists, adding to the pressure of carrying on despite her condition.

Beyond the health scare, Cyrus also reflected on a deeper emotional challenge she faced around that time — a moment where she considered walking away from her music career altogether. She credits Saturday Night Live creator and longtime collaborator Lorne Michaels with offering the words that helped her move forward.

“I had dinner with Lorne, and he said something that now has stuck with me,” Cyrus said. “He goes, ‘Six months. Everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves, and then we start to rebuild.’”

She continued, “He’s like, ‘You have no idea how many artists have sat in this chair and told me they were quitting music. Everyone does this, everyone has these traumatic experiences.’”

Cyrus has had a long and varied career, transitioning from her Disney Channel roots as Hannah Montana to becoming an award-winning artist known for her vocal power and genre-spanning sound. Her resilience in the face of personal and professional challenges has continued to endear her to fans around the world.

The singer has not yet indicated whether she will return to host the New Year’s Eve special again, but her story has already sparked conversations about the physical and emotional toll performers often face behind the scenes.
