Rachel Maddow didn’t hold back on her Monday night show as she aimed at Donald Trump’s overseas business ambitions, this time focusing on a luxury project in Serbia that’s come crashing down spectacularly. And in true Maddow fashion, she couldn’t resist a bit of cheeky commentary along the way.
The scandal centres around a £400 million ($500 million) Trump family development deal in Serbia, which now appears to be on the brink after a key government document used to approve the plan was found to be completely forged. Yes, forged.

The plan? Bulldoze a bombed-out Serbian defence ministry building, a protected heritage site, and throw up a flashy hotel and apartment tower bearing the Trump name. But things have gone sideways after officials revealed that an expert opinion, which was supposedly used to strip the site of its heritage status, was entirely fabricated. Now the official involved is facing criminal charges, and the project is effectively in limbo.

Maddow, of course, didn’t miss the opportunity to draw some pointed comparisons between the Serbian president, widely viewed as authoritarian, and Trump himself, noting that the leader had somehow “come up with some kind of waiver, some kind of permission slip” to clear the way for the hotel project.
“Literally on that site,” she added, referring to the exact spot where the memorial once stood. Maddow shared that Donald Trump Jr. had made repeated trips to Serbia in recent years to support the controversial leader, with this real estate deal being a key part of their relationship. But with the forgery now exposed, it’s all starting to unravel.

“The whole mess is all now falling apart,” she said, with a tone that suggested she wasn’t the least bit surprised. Quoting headlines that said the Trump-Kushner development had hit a “snag,” Maddow chuckled, then exclaimed: “Forgery. What?” She summed it up neatly with a jab: “Darn that rule of law. If it wasn’t for the remaining rule of law… and for those meddling kids.”
And finally, with a sarcastic sigh, she concluded that there may never be a Trump Tower in Europe after all. “Womp womp. Sad trombone.”
