U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is publicly opposing a bipartisan bill aimed at combating international discrimination against Israel, claiming it infringes on Americans’ constitutional rights.
The bill in question, the IGO Anti-Boycott Act, was reintroduced in January by Republican Congressman Mike Lawler of New York and Democratic Congressman Josh Gottheimer. The legislation seeks to “stop international governmental organizations from discriminating against Israel,” according to its sponsors.

But Greene, a high-profile conservative voice in the GOP, voiced strong opposition to the bill on Sunday, suggesting that a vote on it was imminent. She shared an image on social media claiming that the legislation could impose a “prison sentence up to 20 years” for Americans participating in boycotts of Israel—something she called a clear violation of basic rights.
“I will be voting NO,” Greene wrote. “It is my job to defend Americans’ rights to buy or boycott whomever they choose without the government harshly fining them or imprisoning them.” She continued by questioning the bill’s focus: “But what I don’t understand is why we are voting on a bill on behalf of other countries and not the President’s executive orders that are FOR OUR COUNTRY???”
While the bill has support from members of both parties, Greene is not alone in her concern. Former Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz also criticized the legislation, framing it as a threat to civil liberties, even while acknowledging the problem of antisemitism.
“Antisemitism is bad and should be categorically rejected. Not every idea cooked up to respond to Antisemitism is a good one,” Gaetz posted. He warned of the dangerous precedent such legislation could set.
“There’s a real danger in passing bills like this. Somewhere, Democrats are writing a bill to imprison the rest of us for 20 years if we boycott countries that sign the Paris Climate Accords…or join the UN…or bribe the WTO/WHO. And they may get power again,” he added.

“Which is why we shouldn’t use ours to punish dissent or ‘thought crimes’ with prison. Antisemitism is a real problem. It deserves a response far more serious and thoughtful than this dangerous and unconstitutional Lawler virtue signal.”
While supporters argue the bill is a necessary measure to combat international bias against Israel, critics within the GOP are raising red flags over its potential impact on free speech and domestic rights. The debate has now exposed growing fractures within Republican ranks over how to balance foreign policy support with constitutional protections at home.
