In a move shaking both Hollywood and political circles, First Lady Melania Trump has inked a $40 million deal with Amazon to turn her life story into a high-budget documentary. The deal, described as “eye-watering,” has attracted intense scrutiny not just for the staggering sum, but also for Melania’s choice of director: Brett Ratner.
Ratner, once a prominent Hollywood filmmaker known for titles like X-Men: The Last Stand, was effectively sidelined from the industry after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct emerged in 2017. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, actresses Olivia Munn and Natasha Henstridge were among the six women who accused Ratner of harassment—allegations he has denied.

Despite this, Melania has tapped him to lead her documentary project, triggering backlash from industry insiders. “Everyone in liberal Hollywood is melting down about it. They can’t believe Melania got $40m,” an insider revealed. The same source added, “Most people would be concerned about the fact Brett was ‘cancelled,’ but the Trumps don’t care.”
Ratner reportedly played a significant role in brokering the lucrative deal with Amazon, a factor some believe may explain the Trumps’ indifference to his controversial past. According to The Daily Mail, the project will not only be a feature-length documentary but will also include a two-to-three-episode follow-up docuseries. Both will stream on Prime Video and see a limited theatrical release.
An Amazon spokesperson commented: “We are excited to share this truly unique story with our millions of customers around the world.” The documentary is set to trace Melania’s journey from her early days in the fashion world at just 16, through her international modeling career, and her eventual move to the United States in 1996.
From there, the film will chronicle her rise within New York‘s elite social scene, culminating in her marriage to real estate mogul and future president Donald Trump. These aspects were recently touched upon in her best-selling memoir.

Speculation is swirling around Amazon Executive Chairman Jeff Bezos’ involvement. Some, including Puck co-founder Matthew Belloni, suggest the project may be a strategic play to improve relations with Trump. Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez, were recently seen at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida residence, fueling rumors of an evolving alliance.
Reports also indicate Amazon could contribute $1 million to Trump’s future inauguration fund. Bezos is said to be among several corporate leaders seeking to build bridges with the expected next administration, signaling that this documentary might be as politically calculated as it is biographical.
