Michelle Obama isn’t holding back when it comes to addressing public speculation about her marriage to former President Barack Obama. In a candid appearance on the Thursday, May 1 episode of The Diary of a CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett, the former First Lady opened up about the reality of long-term commitment — and issued a pointed message about her relationship dynamics.
“If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it,” Michelle said, responding to ongoing rumors about tension in their marriage. “He would know it,” she added, referring to her brother, Craig Robinson. “I’m not a martyr. I would be problem-solving in public. ‘Let me tell you what he did.’”
Robinson, who co-hosts the IMO podcast alongside Michelle, chimed in with humor, saying, “If they were having a problem, I would be doing a podcast with him.”
Michelle, now 61, shares two daughters, Sasha and Malia, with Barack. She emphasized the importance of staying committed even during difficult times. “The beauty of my husband and our partnership is that neither one of us was ever really, ever going to quit at it, because that’s not who we are. And I know that about him. He knows that about me.”
She continued, “I talk about these things because I think that people give up too quickly on marriage,” as reported by the Daily Mail.
Throughout the episode, Michelle stressed the need for constant communication, flexibility, and growth within a marriage. “Because there is so much friction built into the equation. And if you’re not getting help, talking about it, going to therapy, just understanding how things are changing, and how you continuously renegotiate your relationship with your partner, I just see people quitting,” she said.
Michelle also addressed the public perception of her marriage, acknowledging that many people look at her and Barack as “#couplegoals,” but she was quick to add, “I’m like, it’s hard.”
Her remarks come in the wake of controversial claims made by Tucker Carlson about the Obamas’ relationship on The Megyn Kelly Show. Kelly echoed similar sentiments during the segment, contrasting her marriage to author Douglas Brunt by saying, “He’s not perfect, but when I think about him, I don’t immediately go to whatever is negative. I go to what’s positive and what I love about him.”
