Ben Affleck offered fans a rare and heartfelt glimpse into his personal life during a recent visit to the Criterion Closet — and it struck a deep emotional chord.
The Accountant 2 star became visibly moved while selecting films for his personal collection, pausing as he picked up David Lynch’s 1980 classic The Elephant Man.

“This is the first and only time I ever saw my father cry,” Affleck revealed, his voice filled with emotion as he cradled the film in his hands.
Reflecting on the impact of Lynch’s powerful story, starring John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins, Affleck continued, “It’s a movie about what it means to be a human being. And it’s heartbreaking and beautiful and… it’s tied to a very personal memory for me.”
Tucking the film carefully into his bag, Affleck softly concluded, “That’s probably a good note to end on.” Affleck’s relationship with his father, Timothy, has been a journey shaped by time, understanding, and resilience.
After Timothy and Affleck’s mother, Christine Anne “Chris” Boldt, separated when Ben was just 12 years old, Timothy moved to California. Despite the distance, the father and son relationship grew stronger over the years.
In a 2020 interview with People, Affleck praised his father’s resilience, particularly highlighting Timothy’s 30 years of sobriety — a milestone that Affleck spoke about with evident admiration.
“Part of being an adult is learning that your parents are just people. They’re not perfect. They were just doing their best. As a child, we expect perfection out of our parents,” Affleck reflected at the time, displaying a maturity and grace gained through lived experience.
