Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) has declined an invitation to attend a scheduled town hall meeting in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, citing concerns over safety and alleging that the event is influenced by “left-wing extremists.”
The town hall was planned for Friday, March 28, and would have been moderated by Mt. Pleasant Town Council Mayor Pro Tempore G.M. Whitley. Mace made her refusal public via the social media platform X, where she openly criticized the motives behind the gathering.

“This is FAKE NEWS. This event is being driven by left-wing extremists and paid agitators with a clear agenda,” Mace wrote emphatically. “I WILL NOT be attending.” Mace further explained her decision, emphasizing that safety concerns influenced her choice to decline participation.
“We’re staying away because it’s not safe, and we refuse to be bullied by individuals who are threatening me, my employees, and my family,” she added, pointing toward the charged political climate surrounding public engagements. Mayor Pro Tempore Whitley, however, expressed disappointment over Mace’s decision, stressing the importance of direct communication between elected officials and their constituents.
“Our community deserves the opportunity to engage directly with our Representative to discuss how federal policies are impacting our daily lives,” Whitley told ABC 4. “An in-person town hall with Congresswoman Mace will provide a platform for open dialogue and accountability.”
The refusal from Rep. Mace comes amidst heightened scrutiny of Republicans avoiding public forums following controversial budget cuts enacted under President Donald Trump’s administration. In recent weeks, multiple GOP lawmakers have faced intense criticism from constituents due to the direct impacts of these budget reductions.
