Trump Supports Musk’s Federal Job Audit, Questions Government Employee Existence

President Donald Trump suggested that government employees who fail to respond to Elon Musk’s demand for job justifications via email “don’t even exist.” During a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, Trump was asked about Musk’s initiative, which requires federal workers to detail their workweeks via email.

Several government agencies have reportedly advised employees not to respond. “I thought it was great because we have people that don’t show up to work, and nobody even knows if they work for the government,” Trump explained. “And then if you don’t answer like you’re sort of semi-fired or you’re fired. Because a lot of people are not answering because they don’t even exist.”

In addition to his support for Musk’s move, Trump revealed an unexpected plan involving the billionaire: visiting Fort Knox to verify the nation’s gold reserves. “We’re going to Fort Knox to see if the gold is there because maybe somebody stole the gold,” Trump remarked.

He further praised Musk’s strategy, calling it a “genius” move. “I think it was actually there was a lot of genius in [Musk] sending [the email],” Trump continued. “If people don’t respond, it’s very possible that there is no such person or they’re not working.”

Musk’s initiative has drawn mixed reactions, with supporters arguing it could help uncover inefficiencies in the federal workforce, while critics warn that it may undermine public sector operations. The ongoing debate highlights the broader discussion on government accountability and workforce transparency.
