President Joe Biden recently made headlines during a ceremony honoring the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League champions at the White House. While addressing the crowd, Biden joked about the limitations he faces as president, humorously admitting that his staff often curbs his decisions—particularly when it comes to inviting young people on stage.
“You know, I thought when I got to be president, I’d get to do things that I want to do. But my staff tells me what I can’t do,” Biden said, standing alongside star player Ali Krieger. “But I’m going to do it anyway. All the young women, young kids out there… come on up and do this one. Stand behind me, would you? Just come on,” Biden added, as reported by The New York Post. After a brief pause, he added, “And the guys.”
While the moment seemed lighthearted, it comes amid Biden’s long history of controversy regarding personal space and physical interactions. During his time as Vice President under the Obama administration, multiple women publicly expressed discomfort with Biden’s touchy behavior. In 2019, seven women came forward with similar stories, detailing how Biden’s actions made them feel uneasy.
Vail Kohnert-Yount, a former White House intern, recounted a 2013 interaction with Biden that left her uncomfortable. “He put his hand on the back of my head and pressed his forehead to mine while he talked to me,” she recalled. While acknowledging that Biden likely had good intentions, Kohnert-Yount added, “It was the kind of inappropriate behavior that makes many women feel uncomfortable and unequal in the workplace.”
Following the allegations, Biden addressed the issue in a public video, stating that while his actions were meant to convey warmth and connection, he understood that not everyone was comfortable with his approach. “The boundaries of protecting personal space have been reset, and I get it. I’ll be much more mindful,” Biden said, pledging to be more respectful of personal boundaries, as per The Washington Post.
However, his past behavior earned him the nickname “Creepy Joe” from his political opponents, particularly former President Donald Trump. As Biden’s presidency approaches its final stretch, his public appearances have lessened, with much of the spotlight now on Vice President Kamala Harris. Despite pledging to end his term on a strong note, Biden has faced recent criticism for vacationing with First Lady Jill Biden as the November elections loom closer.
