In her statement, Jackson expressed regret for the confusion her comments caused. “She extends her sincerest apologies for any confusion caused and reaffirms her respect for Harris’ dual heritage as both Black and Indian,” the statement read.
Jackson emphasized her commitment to unity and understanding, stating, “Janet remains committed to fostering unity, inclusion, and understanding and is grateful for the opportunity to clarify her stance.” She concluded by saying she would continue using her platform to support leaders who promote diversity and progress.
The controversy began when Jackson, in an interview with The Guardian, expressed uncertainty about Harris’ racial background. When asked about Harris being America’s first Black female presidential nominee, Jackson remarked, “She’s not Black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian.” Even after being informed about Harris’ Jamaican father and Indian mother, Jackson doubled down, saying, “Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told that they discovered her father was white.”
It’s important to note that Kamala Harris is the daughter of immigrants—her father is from Jamaica and her mother is from India. Janet Jackson’s comments, based on incorrect information, sparked backlash, prompting her to issue a public apology and clarify her position.
