Despite sharing the same royal bloodline and a deep connection to their late mother, Princess Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry remain estranged, with no communication between them, according to royal insiders. Though both brothers have continued their mother’s charitable legacy in their respective ways, the rift between them has grown into a debate over what Diana’s “true legacy” actually means.
Royal commentator Edward White, in his newly released book Dianaworld, explores the emotional divide between the princes and the symbolic battle over their mother’s memory. According to The Mirror, White claims that Princess Diana would be devastated by the current state of her sons’ relationship.

“But her sons are arguing about what their mother’s true legacy is,” White wrote. “Diana said that she was trying to raise a future king that would ensure the monarchy survived into the 21st century – and William is trying to do a Diana reboot of the monarchy, combining the best of his mother and his grandmother.”
In contrast, some admirers of the late Princess believe Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, is the more faithful torchbearer of Diana’s mission and ideals, especially in his advocacy for mental health and humanitarian causes outside the royal establishment.

White noted the complexity of Diana’s image and how it has shaped public perception of both her sons. “There’s something about Diana that encourages people to read whatever they want to read into her. The way people can look at Diana as embodying totally differing sides of an argument even applies to her sons,” he explained.
As the future king, Prince William has focused on modernizing the monarchy from within, blending the traditional royal framework with his mother’s compassionate touch. Meanwhile, Harry, who stepped down from royal duties in 2020, has emphasized personal freedom, emotional openness, and social activism—qualities many associate with Diana’s more rebellious spirit.

Still, White insists that the late Princess of Wales would have hoped for reconciliation between her sons above all else. “Princess Diana would have expressed her wish for William and Harry to sit in the same room to make amends with each other,” he added.
While both brothers carry forward aspects of their mother’s legacy, the ongoing feud continues to overshadow their shared history. As observers and royal watchers reflect on Diana’s influence, the question of who best represents her vision remains a source of debate and emotional weight within and beyond the royal family.
